Retiring Bundles

One of the things that happens as a catalog comes to the end of its active life is that some products that were bundled together for a 10% saving carry on to the next catalog. Normally when this happens, they are no longer bundled and the 10% instant saving is no longer available. I thought I’d point out the retiring bundles, i.e. the products that are carrying over into the upcoming catalog but will cost more from June 1st.

There are four of these in the Occasions catalog (and I’m happy that they are carrying over because I have all four!) – take a look below at the bundle along with my favourite of the cards that I’ve made with each. Just click on the picture of the bundle if you decide you need this at 10% off! Click on the picture of the card to go to the original post.

Window Box Thinlits Dies again

I was really pleased with yesterday’s card using the Window Box Thinlits dies, or at least the candles die where I made a pretty subtle card. Actually it was using mostly colours from the subtle collection and sweet sugarplum fits in well. I decided to make another, but this one a lot brighter and louder and therefore I turned to the brights collection and a different in-colour which fits nicely with the brights, cucumber crush.

I took a piece of whisper white card stock and lined the candles die up to the corner, and just remembered vaguely the margin around the die. After running it through the big shot, I moved it over, guesstimating how far along and trying to remember what my margin looked like. I was happy that it came out so well – and I got my gap between the 2 sets of candles pretty good. Then came the second row and all I had to guide me was the edge piece – I had to guess on height. Apparently it was my day and it all came out fine.

There wasn’t enough space to add snail like I did yesterday, so instead I got out my silicone mat and a sponge dauber and carefully dabbed a little tombow glue on the back being careful not to let my piece move. It wasn’t perfect – there was some time with the glue eraser, but it was pretty good. Next I took little strips of scrap cut a hair over 1/4 inch wide in cucumber crush,  melon mambo, pumpkin pie and daffodil delight and put them on the back. They didn’t all stick perfectly, but well enough that I could put snail all over the back and glue it to a cucumber crush mat.

I debated on sentiments and banners but in the end, everything detracted from the fun. And it’s not as if it’s not obvious that it’s a birthday card! I took a piece of whisper white to get an idea on the size that I wanted which turned out to be 4 1/4 square. Using the envelope punch board, it was simple to create a custom envelope for my square card. And since I’ll likely give this to someone at work, it doesn’t matter that it’s a square envelope.

Window Box Thinlits Dies Candles

When I made the box using the window box thinlits dies recently, I really liked one of the dies that is designed to add a pattern to the side of the box. I thought it would be perfect for a birthday card so that’s what I’m sharing today. I wanted a really clean, mostly white card to really show this off. I intended to have all my candles the same size to start with but that morphed into three different colours.

I started by running the die through the big shot with a piece of whisper white and then started cutting strips of coloured card about 1/4 inch wide. The flames are so saffron and about 1 1/2 inches long whereas the candles are just over an inch long. I’ve got pear pizzazz, sweet sugarplum and calypso coral on the card. I used snail to add glue around the edges of the white card since they don’t need to be firmly stuck down, just held in place long enough to get the pieces onto the card base. Here’s what the back looks like – as you can see, there’s nothing holding down the tops of the candles:

I stamped the sentiment from Dragonfly Dreams in pear pizzazz and then used more snail over the back of the candles to glue it down. Here’s a close up showing the candles a little better

It’s definitely a fun die to play with.

It doesn’t matter – you can buy a prepaid and once that runs out you go back to your monthly subscription. Personally, I like to buy a 12 month subscription because it’s $2 cheaper per month AND it gets me 4 Sale-a-bration items!

Window Box Thinlits Dies

I’m finally sharing the hexagonal box that I made with the Window Box Thinlits Dies – I started this a while ago but got sidetracked by the gorgeous piece that cuts out the top and made a card instead! And of course I couldn’t just make a plain box; I had to line it.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Window Box Thinlits Dies

Here’s the Stampin’ Up! video showing how to make the box.

I cut out my box pieces twice in sweet sugarplum and then cut out the beautiful pattern on the top and the dots on all 6 sides. To line it, I used a piece of blushing bride and cut out the main box piece once. I then used my stampin’ trimmer to reduce the size of all edges, folded the score lines and ended up with a liner for half of the box. I then cut just three sides and cut that down too. Fast fuse was perfect for attaching the liner by putting the glue down the seams where there was no decoration. After I’d put the box together, I needed a few glue dots on the top to ensure everything was glued down properly. I didn’t add a bottom to the liner so there’s a nice contrast inside as well as on the outside. It’s a good size box – 2 inches tall and 3 1/4 inches across from side to side or 3 1/2 inches from point to point.

Window Box Thinlits Dies

The Window Box Thinlits dies are really fun. I started making a box, just to see how it all worked, but after I’d cut out 2 shapes to put the box together I got side-tracked by the extra pieces in the set that allow you to decorate the box with cutouts. And I remembered that there was a card using the top of the box cutout which I really liked. So here’s a CASE.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Window Box Thinlits Dies - Window Shopping

I started by using an aquapainter with sweet sugarplum, flirty flamingo and mint macaron just putting colour onto a piece of whisper white and then seeing how it looked. It was okay, but I decided I wanted the mint macaron mostly where the leaves were. Luckily, I hadn’t thrown out my first attempt at the cut out when I’d forgotten to use the precision plate and it hadn’t cut completely. So I used it as a template to paint mint macaron into the right areas this time using a piece of watercolor paper. Then I filled in the rest of the areas with the other two colours. Here’s how it all looked at this point.

After stamping the sentiment, from Window Shopping, I added dimensionals to the whisper white allowing enough space for the watercolor paper to fit in the middle. I applied fast fuse to the back of the watercolour paper and then holding both pieces carefully, added them to the mint macaron card base. I think that a banner across the cut out as featured in the catalog (page 43) would be good because it would allow a dimensional under it. But I really wanted to show the whole pattern. I’m definitely playing with this technique again, it’s fun and relaxing.

I hope you enjoyed today’s project. I should have mentioned that the Window Box Thinlits Dies and the Window Shopping products come bundled together for a saving of 10%.
