Avant Garden Emboss Resist Birthday

I can’t believe that it took me so long to start using the Avant Garden Sale-a-bration set. Now that I’ve started, apparently I can’t stop!

The background for this card is the second piece that I did when I made yesterday’s background. To remind you how I did it: I used a piece of watercolor paper for the top layer and, after using the embossing buddy, stamped the flower image from Avant Garden in versamark. It was hard to see where I’d stamped but if I held the paper at the right angle, I could just see where the versamark was so as to avoid stamping again in the same place. I sprinkled on the clear embossing powder and heated. After a little cooling time,  I used my aquapainter to add a fair amount of water to where I wanted my first colour. As with yesterday’s card I used dapper denim and then bermuda bay, adding more water before the second colour to wet the rest of the card. I went back a few times, adding more of one colour or the other and blending in places.

I used a lot of fast fuse to attach this to my bermuda bay card base, just to be sure that it was firmly in place. I found originally that watercolor paper that has been made quite wet and therefore isn’t completely flat will pull away from the card base in a day or two unless very firmly prevented. The sentiment is from Rose Wonder and I stamped it in bermuda bay onto watercolor paper so that it would match perfectly to the homemade DSP. The layering ovals framelits dies gave me a perfect oval with a matching scalloped mat. I love how the dies give such a subtle mat. To finish it off, I added a little bow using the beautiful bermuda bay 1/8 inch stitched ribbon. I don’t know why I don’t use it (and Bermuda Bay) more often.

I hope you enjoyed today’s project. Avant Garden emboss resist thank you

A couple of days ago I was playing with the Avant Garden set when I decided to use the emboss resist technique with it.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Avant Garden - Hello You thinlits dies - emboss resist

I used a piece of watercolor paper for the top layer and, after using the embossing buddy, stamped the flower image from Avant Garden in versamark. It was hard to see where I’d stamped but if I held the paper at the right angle, I could just see where the versamark was so as to avoid stamping again in the same place. I sprinkled on the clear embossing powder and heated. I actually did two pieces at the same time figuring that it was likely that one would be the test piece but although they are different, they both came out well.

I took the first piece since it had had time to cool down and added a lot of water with my aquapainter. Then I used dapper denim and bermuda bay to add colour. I went back a few times, adding more of one colour or the other and blending in places. Whilst that was drying, I did my second piece, which I’ll share tomorrow.

The watercolor paper had bowed a little after the embossing and all the water, so the bermuda bay mat helped to straighten it, as well as give a good border. This then went onto a  dapper denim card base. To finish off the card, I cut out the thanks using the Hello You framelits dies in dapper denim. I dabbed glue onto it using a sponge dauber and the silicone craft mat – this way, as I’ve mentioned before, you get enough glue onto the back without glue spooling around the cut out.

I was really pleased with how this technique worked and love the dapper denim and bermuda bay together. I’m going to try a few more colour combinations as well.

Just 8 days to go in Sale-a-bration!  I just put in another order, stocking up on basics and getting extra rewards at the same time. It means that I have plenty of envelopes and glue and card bases to keep me going for a long time now! Why not do it when you get extras, right?!

Avant Garden Happy Birthday

I really liked the multi coloured flowers that I made about a week ago with Avant Garden and decided to have another go. This time using daffodil delight with watermelon wonder.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Avant Garden - Hello You thinlits Dies

I had a strip of whisper white card stock so that I could keep fairly straight along with my stamping but the first attempt was just too straight. So I added a bit more movement and I like how it came out. I inked up the flower stamp with daffodil delight and then added a tap with a sponge dauber inked in watermelon wonder. I then went back afterwards and added the stamens, again in watermelon wonder, after stamping off once. To add a little more shimmer, which doesn’t photograph very well at all, I also went over the stamens with a clear wink of Stella. The birthday is also from Avant Garden and the colour is the same mix of daffodil delight and watermelon wonder created the same way by dabbing watermelon wonder lightly on top of the stamp once it was inked in daffodil delight. This was actually because I made this card over a couple of days and thought I was using real red and figured that it would not look right with more muted shade of the flowers. I was also sick so I’m claiming that as the reason that my brain wasn’t working!

To finish off the card, I cut out the happy using the Hello You thinlits dies in watermelon wonder and put it on a strip of whisper white before putting my layer onto a watermelon wonder card base.

Avant Garden, a bower

Having finally started playing with the Avant Garden set, I continued! This time I created a veritable bower of flowers to frame a sentiment from Suite Sentiments, a set which has 11 incredibly versatile sentiments.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Avant Garden - Suite Sentiments

I inked up the flower stamp in daffodil delight and lightly touched a real red sponge dauber onto the middle before stamping. This meant cleaning the stamp off each time so as not to get real red onto my daffodil delight ink pad, but worth it. I stamped a few extra ones on scrap paper to test whether I needed the stamens, but they detracted from the look. Right, no stamens!  I then realised that since the colours had merged to make more of an orange, a real red sentiment was going to be jarring but a daffodil delight one would be too pale – so I inked up the sentiment and grabbed the sponge dauber again and added some real red to the sentiment before stamping. I really like how this came out.

Avant Garden

Today I’m sharing a card made with one of the Sale-a-bration sets, Avant Garden. I really love this set and it was one of the first free products that I ordered in January but for some reason it didn’t get inked up until this past weekend.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Avant Garden

I took inspiration from Eimear, my sister’s upline in the UK – she posted a video earlier this week and I really loved how a dab of a sponge dauber in the middle of the flower looked so beautiful. I had to have a go myself. If you want to check out Eimear’s video (which includes showing how to extend the stitched shapes square framelit into a rectangle so I really recommend you do view it) click here.

I’ve got a bit of a sweet sugarplum thing going at the moment, so decided to use that for my flowers with a little dab of perfect plum into the centre of the stamp before I stamped onto the whisper white card. Incidentally, I found it easier from a placement perspective to do the stalks (pear pizzazz) first and then the flowers. The sentiment is also from Avant Garden and is in perfect plum as are the stamens. I need to play with some other colour combinations too.

I really like the sponge dauber effect – here’s a close up. The whole thing really looks like a watercolor painting! I cannot imagine why this set sat uninked for so long.
