Bookcase Builder

Here’s a card using the bookcase builder set to make shelving, but just a little shelf. It’s also showcasing the new emerald envy 1/8 inch taffeta ribbon which is so easy going.

I wanted to leave enough space for one of the great sentiments in the set and that meant having less as the focal point. A little shelf with a space on the left for a bow was the perfect answer. The shelf is archival basic black and the books and teddy bear are in emerald envy, dapper denim and delightful dijon. Once I’d stamped those and trimmed down the whisper white, I cut a piece of basic black as the mat. Next was the sentiment which I actually embossed in white but rather than using versamark, I used the craft white ink. Not only does heat embossing dry the rather juicy ink, I get much better coverage with the embossing powder because it’s so juicy. I popped the panel up with dimensionals and then added the emerald envy ribbon bow with a glue dot.

I hope you enjoyed today’s project, having such a large border of emerald envy reminds me again what a great colour it is! I’m already into the “oh my, in colours are retiring in 3.5 months” which has me looking more at all the in colors. So you’re likely to see more of the in colors coming up, especially the ones actually retiring this year – I’m really going to miss mint macaron and delightful dijon. How about you? Which ones are you going to miss?

Window Box Thinlits Dies again

I was really pleased with yesterday’s card using the Window Box Thinlits dies, or at least the candles die where I made a pretty subtle card. Actually it was using mostly colours from the subtle collection and sweet sugarplum fits in well. I decided to make another, but this one a lot brighter and louder and therefore I turned to the brights collection and a different in-colour which fits nicely with the brights, cucumber crush.

I took a piece of whisper white card stock and lined the candles die up to the corner, and just remembered vaguely the margin around the die. After running it through the big shot, I moved it over, guesstimating how far along and trying to remember what my margin looked like. I was happy that it came out so well – and I got my gap between the 2 sets of candles pretty good. Then came the second row and all I had to guide me was the edge piece – I had to guess on height. Apparently it was my day and it all came out fine.

There wasn’t enough space to add snail like I did yesterday, so instead I got out my silicone mat and a sponge dauber and carefully dabbed a little tombow glue on the back being careful not to let my piece move. It wasn’t perfect – there was some time with the glue eraser, but it was pretty good. Next I took little strips of scrap cut a hair over 1/4 inch wide in cucumber crush,  melon mambo, pumpkin pie and daffodil delight and put them on the back. They didn’t all stick perfectly, but well enough that I could put snail all over the back and glue it to a cucumber crush mat.

I debated on sentiments and banners but in the end, everything detracted from the fun. And it’s not as if it’s not obvious that it’s a birthday card! I took a piece of whisper white to get an idea on the size that I wanted which turned out to be 4 1/4 square. Using the envelope punch board, it was simple to create a custom envelope for my square card. And since I’ll likely give this to someone at work, it doesn’t matter that it’s a square envelope.

Window Box Thinlits Dies Candles

When I made the box using the window box thinlits dies recently, I really liked one of the dies that is designed to add a pattern to the side of the box. I thought it would be perfect for a birthday card so that’s what I’m sharing today. I wanted a really clean, mostly white card to really show this off. I intended to have all my candles the same size to start with but that morphed into three different colours.

I started by running the die through the big shot with a piece of whisper white and then started cutting strips of coloured card about 1/4 inch wide. The flames are so saffron and about 1 1/2 inches long whereas the candles are just over an inch long. I’ve got pear pizzazz, sweet sugarplum and calypso coral on the card. I used snail to add glue around the edges of the white card since they don’t need to be firmly stuck down, just held in place long enough to get the pieces onto the card base. Here’s what the back looks like – as you can see, there’s nothing holding down the tops of the candles:

I stamped the sentiment from Dragonfly Dreams in pear pizzazz and then used more snail over the back of the candles to glue it down. Here’s a close up showing the candles a little better

It’s definitely a fun die to play with.

Beautiful You Paper Piecing

Beautiful You was one of the first sets on my must have list and I made 8 cards with it the weekend after Julia won the set during Prize Patrol. I didn’t want to have all 8 post on my blog in a row, but I think maybe I’m spreading them out a bit too much! Beautiful You is a really versatile stamp set; with three beautiful images and eight sentiments it’s able to handle almost any occasion.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Beautiful You

I picked out calypso coral for this card and used the colour and my aquapainter to colour in the girl’s dress which was stamped on watercolor paper. One reminder on this – the archival basic black is great, but give it a little time to really dry or your colouring ends up a little grey! I also find it easier (unless I’m doing a big watery wash) to keep very little water in the brush – it’s more controllable. Whilst the dress was drying, I stamped the top of the image again onto the flower design of the calypso coral sheet from the Subtles DSP stack. After snipping around her hat, I glued that in place to give her a fun hat which I matched by covering the envelope flap in the same paper.

Then it was a simple matter of adding a slim basic black mat with fast fuse – a strong adhesive is needed to ensure that the watercolor paper is perfectly flat after it’s been absorbing water. And finally gluing it all onto a calypso coral card base.
