Star of Light for CAS Colours & Sketches

I’m still using the Star of Light set but today it’s not a Christmas card. I thought after 4 or 5 days of Christmas, it was time for a break!  This is the fifth Thursday in the month which means that it’s time for the dreaded double at CAS Colours & Sketches and it’s the last week for Karen as hostess for a while. I know that people fear the double – I did – but it’s a lot of fun. It also tends to lead to other designs as you get carried away either with the colours OR the sketch and then realise that you’ve wandered off at a tangent and are not using both which you must do to fulfill the challenge requirements.

And here are the challenge requirements:

The left hand element looked a bit like torn paper to me which I never do; it’s just not clean enough for me so I needed an alternative. What a surprise – I picked up the Star of Light swoosh! I stamped that down the left hand of my very vanilla and then used a piece of rich razzleberry ribbon from the Holiday catalog as the stripe. This was a useful element because I love the mint macaron with the rich razzleberry but I’m not so fond of the tangerine tango with the mint macaron so the ribbon stripe is keeping them separated!

The sentiment is from Love & Affection and after I’d stamped it, I felt (unusually) that there was just a little too much white space so out came the enamel shapes in rich razzleberry to finish off the card.

I hope that you’ll head over to the challenge site to check out the rest of the design team’s creations and to have a go yourself.

See you tomorrow,

Star of Light with a Merry Medley

As I mentioned a couple of days ago, I heat embossed Merry Medley with the copper embossing powder (I’m having a bit of an embossing week!) and then cut up the image into separate sentiments. As you can see, I’m continuing using up that pile of sentiments. It’s a lot more sparkly and pretty in person.

The gorgeous swoosh from Star of Light was still out on my desk – apparently I haven’t quite adopted Pootles’ mantra of “don’t put it down, put it away”! – and ever since the earlier card, I wanted to do the swooshes again, this time on night of navy. So I swiped my card with the embossing buddy and stamped the swoosh a couple of times, ensuring that they began in about the same place, and sprinkled silver embossing powder. After heating so that they shone, I used the embossing buddy again and stamped a couple more times and added the copper embossing powder. I’ve seen mixed metals around lately and thought it would be fun to try on a card and I really like how it looks. Of course after I’d added the two copper swooshes, I could see that I was missing a tiny bit of silver at the bottom to balance the card, so I went for a third silver embossed swoosh.

I wanted the sentiment as part of the card, rather than trying to really stand out, so for once, I didn’t pop it up. A few enamel shapes in metallic silver and I was done.

Now that I have the design, this would be an easy card to mass produce – with just two rounds of heat embossing rather than three! Just be sure to hold your cardstock unfolded or your card can warp slightly. I originally thought that folded would be better, it’s really not. If it’s single, you can turn it over and straighten out your card by heating the other side.

See you tomorrow,

Starlight Thinlits Dies

At the weekend I was playing with the Star of Light stamp set for the first time and that meant that I pulled out the matching Starlight Thinlits dies to see what was in there. I then ran all of the pieces through the big shot, just to see what we had. So I didn’t plan the island indigo for this card, it just happened to be a scrap next to my big shot. But what a beautiful star.

At first glance, it’s hard to see exactly how this comes together – it’s two pieces. There are a silver foil star which fits perfectly behind the delicate cut out island indigo star, I used the 2 way glue pen to attach it. The sentiment comes from the Star of Light set and it’s heat embossed in silver. Once I had that completed, I cut out tiny pieces of dimensionals that would fit in the points of the star and popped it up.

There are quite a few other beautiful shapes in the Starlight Thinlits Dies set, I’ll be playing with them soon and then sharing with you.

I’m busily preparing for my Christmas Buffet, card making style on Sunday – check out the details on my classes page.

Have a great Tuesday, see you tomorrow,

Star of Light

I’ve been meaning to play with the Star of Light stamp set, but until today I somehow didn’t get around to it. Yesterday I stamped the Merry Medley large background image onto a large piece of night of navy using the copper embossing powder – presumably inspired by Friday’s card which featured the gorgeous specialty piece of embossed paper from the Petals & Paisleys DSP. I wondered about making an extra large card to use all of it, and then this morning realised what I wanted to do. I carefully cut up my stamped and embossed image on the trimmer into individual sentiments. Now I have a pile of ready stamped and embossed sentiments to play with. Perfect!

This felt like the perfect time to use the Star of Light set, having the stars and swooshes just bursting out from the sentiment. I stamped in night of navy and then lamented the lack of any copper embellishments when I realised that I can get the same effect with more embossing. Hence the added copper stars, also from Star of Light, to pull the card together.

I used a variety of adhesives on this one – fuse on the whisper white card since it had warped a little, snail to attach the night of navy to the copper foil since tombow slides too much and then dimensionals to pop up the sentiment. I do like having a variety of adhesives, it makes life so much easier.

I happened to put the last two days cards next to each other and noticed that they are identical in layout. Did you notice? I think it’s amazing how changes in colour and patterns make them look so different!

This upcoming Saturday is National Card Making Day; I’m planning a Christmas Card buffet on Sunday afternoon (the 2nd October). A buffet is where there are a number of cards and you choose which ones you want to make and how many of them. If you’re local and are interested, let me know.

See you tomorrow,

Twinkle Trees Christmas Card

Happy Friday! The star of the show today is definitely the new Glitter Stampin’ Emboss Powder which has taken over the card and made the fun Twinkle Trees set fade into the background!

What do you think? Isn’t the glitter stampin’ emboss powder amazing? It’s really hard to photograph and it looks masses better in person. I was a bit curious as to how it would work on this, my first project using it. When you stamp in versamark and then sprinkle on the glitter emboss powder the powder looks a little bit dull. Not as dull as ordinary emboss powder, but somewhat dull. Definitely dull in comparison with what happens when you heat it and it gets really shiny and glossy! So no worries about how you know it’s “done”. And even better, the glitter stays on the card.

I’ve got a little ahead of myself! I started the card by stamping on a piece of whisper white scrap in emerald envy using the Twinkle Trees stamp set. I love the emerald envy, it’s such a Christmassy colour. I’ve finally decided which of last year’s retired in colours that I like the best, it’s mossy meadow because I miss it the  most but emerald envy is helping with that gap! After stamping, I added the glitter stampin’ emboss powder and I love what it’s done to the card. So much so, that I decided to keep the rest of the card extra simple so as not to detract from it – although I think it would be hard to detract from this sparkle. I trimmed the scrap and made an emerald envy mat. The sentiment is from Star of Light also in emerald envy which I stamped before adhering the christmas tree panel, just in case. And there you go – clean and simple and very glittery!

Here’s another attempt at a photo to show the glittery-ness
