Star of Light with a Merry Medley

As I mentioned a couple of days ago, I heat embossed Merry Medley with the copper embossing powder (I’m having a bit of an embossing week!) and then cut up the image into separate sentiments. As you can see, I’m continuing using up that pile of sentiments. It’s a lot more sparkly and pretty in person.

The gorgeous swoosh from Star of Light was still out on my desk – apparently I haven’t quite adopted Pootles’ mantra of “don’t put it down, put it away”! – and ever since the earlier card, I wanted to do the swooshes again, this time on night of navy. So I swiped my card with the embossing buddy and stamped the swoosh a couple of times, ensuring that they began in about the same place, and sprinkled silver embossing powder. After heating so that they shone, I used the embossing buddy again and stamped a couple more times and added the copper embossing powder. I’ve seen mixed metals around lately and thought it would be fun to try on a card and I really like how it looks. Of course after I’d added the two copper swooshes, I could see that I was missing a tiny bit of silver at the bottom to balance the card, so I went for a third silver embossed swoosh.

I wanted the sentiment as part of the card, rather than trying to really stand out, so for once, I didn’t pop it up. A few enamel shapes in metallic silver and I was done.

Now that I have the design, this would be an easy card to mass produce – with just two rounds of heat embossing rather than three! Just be sure to hold your cardstock unfolded or your card can warp slightly. I originally thought that folded would be better, it’s really not. If it’s single, you can turn it over and straighten out your card by heating the other side.

See you tomorrow,

Merry Medley for FMS

As I mentioned yesterday, I embossed the Merry Medley image in copper embossing powder on night of navy and then cut it up into ten or so separate sentiments. Here I’m using another of them.

I was inspired by the current sketch at Freshly Made Sketches which is:

I don’t think I’ve ever covered the card front completely in DSP before, it definitely gives a very clean look. This is a piece from the Floral Boutique DSP. To tie the copper embossing into the rest of the card, I added a piece of copper foil as one of the sketch’s elements, it’s very rich looking.

And to finish off the card, I popped up the sentiment. Truly a very quick and easy card – once you’ve got a pile of ready embossed sentiments in front of you anyway!

Star of Light

I’ve been meaning to play with the Star of Light stamp set, but until today I somehow didn’t get around to it. Yesterday I stamped the Merry Medley large background image onto a large piece of night of navy using the copper embossing powder – presumably inspired by Friday’s card which featured the gorgeous specialty piece of embossed paper from the Petals & Paisleys DSP. I wondered about making an extra large card to use all of it, and then this morning realised what I wanted to do. I carefully cut up my stamped and embossed image on the trimmer into individual sentiments. Now I have a pile of ready stamped and embossed sentiments to play with. Perfect!

This felt like the perfect time to use the Star of Light set, having the stars and swooshes just bursting out from the sentiment. I stamped in night of navy and then lamented the lack of any copper embellishments when I realised that I can get the same effect with more embossing. Hence the added copper stars, also from Star of Light, to pull the card together.

I used a variety of adhesives on this one – fuse on the whisper white card since it had warped a little, snail to attach the night of navy to the copper foil since tombow slides too much and then dimensionals to pop up the sentiment. I do like having a variety of adhesives, it makes life so much easier.

I happened to put the last two days cards next to each other and noticed that they are identical in layout. Did you notice? I think it’s amazing how changes in colour and patterns make them look so different!

This upcoming Saturday is National Card Making Day; I’m planning a Christmas Card buffet on Sunday afternoon (the 2nd October). A buffet is where there are a number of cards and you choose which ones you want to make and how many of them. If you’re local and are interested, let me know.

See you tomorrow,

Merry Medley

Today I decided to give into temptation and make another Christmas card; it’s been a week or so! And I decided it was time for Merry Medley to get another outing. Last time I used cherry cobbler for the entire stamp and stamped it off but this time I decided that the sentiments needed to be much louder. So I reached for my real red and emerald envy stampin’ write markers and had fun colouring in the sentiments.

When I completed the colouring, I breathed heavily on the stamp to moisten the ink and then got a piece of whisper white and laid it on top carefully lining up the edge to ensure it was square. Then I took a couple of large blocks and pressed down on the card stock. After removing the blocks, I quickly flipped over the Merry Medley wood mounted stamp and the card fell away without (much) smudging. I trimmed the edges to ensure I had room for my real red mat as well as a deeper than usual border of the emerald envy – and also to remove the smudge. No mistakes in stamping, right?

Why wood mounted? My favourite type of stamps these days are the photopolymer ones – it’s great that they really stick to the blocks and you can see through them. But for large background stamps where the choice is wood or clear mount, I always go with wood. There’s just too much chance of the clear mounted stamp falling off the block at the wrong moment.

I hope that you’re enjoying the weekend and have some time to play with your crafting supplies.

See you tomorrow,

Merry Medley for a sneak peek

It’s a bit early for Christmas cards, but I couldn’t resist playing with some of my new goodies. Don’t worry, I’m not switching completely into Christmas mode – I’ve got some new sets from the upcoming holiday catalog which aren’t necessarily Christmassy, but Merry Medley is nothing else!

Stampin' Up! Merry Medley

Merry Medley is one huge stamp – the set consists of a single background stamp and whilst it’s available in clear mount or wood, I’d go for the wood. My favourite types of stamps are photopolymer and after that I tend to go for clear – they are cheaper and take up less space on my shelf. But for background stamps, they are much easier to handle in wood. I also get wood if there are loads of tiny images – especially sentiments that I might use a lot.

I used my stamp-a-ma-jig to line up the image and after stamping off once on scrap paper, stamped in cherry cobbler onto very vanilla. Somehow this paler intensity seems to give an old fashioned look. I decided, unusually for me, that all the card needed to finish it, was a bow. I used one of the two ribbons in the new 3/8″ taffeta ribbon combo pack (the other is emerald envy) and glued a strip around the very vanilla piece before gluing it to a cherry cobbler card base. Then I tied a little bow and attached it with a glue dot.

I hope that you enjoyed the sneak peek of two of the new products; tomorrow will probably be another, but this time non-Christmassy!

See you tomorrow,

Liz
