Thoughts and prayers for a birthday

When I finally inked up the Stampin’ Up! Thoughts and Prayers stamp set, I rather fell for the tree image. It doesn’t just need to be for sympathy cards and I decided to make a selection to show that.

Stampin' Up! Thoughts and Prayers, Work of Art, Sassy Salutations

Stampin’ Up! currently has a good selection of teal ink colours and I selected soft sky, pool party and lost lagoon for this card, stamping them on very vanilla. The swoosh is from the Work of Art set and I used my stamp-a-ma-jig to help me line them up as I wanted them. I then put the card to one side whilst I worked on another card. After the short break and thus being certain that the ink was dry, I used the embossing buddy to remove any static from the card and then stamped the tree in versamark. After sprinkling on the gold embossing powder, I used the heat gun to really bring this card to life. I think that one reason that I love making Christmas cards is that they tend to have a lot of metallic embossing!

The sentiment is from the Sassy Salutations set and is stamped in lost lagoon. As you can see, the matching liner is also in lost lagoon, from the backgrounds DSP.

See you tomorrow,

Fabulous You for Bilma’s birthday

This is the last card that I made at the weekend crop last month; I was saving it to show on Bilma’s birthday rather than before. It’s using the retired Stampin’ Up! Fabulous You set which I borrowed from Mitzi whilst at the crop. Bilma is very much into shoes so it seems appropriate for her birthday.

Stampin' Up! Fabulous You with Sassy Salutations and a scored border

As usual where metallics are concerned, it’s not a great photograph; the card looks better in person – the blackberry bliss is a much richer colour than it appears here. I really struggle to get a good shot of metallic embossing.

Details of the card

After using the embossing buddy, I stamped the shoe in versamark and then used the heat tool after sprinkling on the gold embossing powder. I reapplied the embossing buddy and then followed the same process with the sentiment from the Sassy Salutations set. I finished off the card by using the envelope liner thinlits dies with the backgrounds DSP in blackberry bliss to line the envelope.

As I was typing this, I decided that the card needed something extra. A border. So I got out my Simply Scored and added a score line 3/8 inch from the edge. I think that the frame really enhances the card. Here’s how it looked previously.

Let me know which you prefer!

Basic Black Flurry

The Paper Players are playing to my preference this week – silver or gold. I can’t stop making Christmas cards and I love heat embossing so it’s an easy one! I decided to go for a sophisticated look and do black and silver.

Stampin' Up! Festive Flurries and Sassy Salutations

This is last year’s Festive Flurry stamp set – I had to buy it even though it was retiring because it’s so beautiful. So I used the embossing buddy before stamping the snowflake in versamark and sprinkling silver embossing powder over the card. A few sharp flicks to the back of the card got rid of the excess and the snowflake after heat embossing looked great. I cut it out using the festive flurry dies. Then I embossed the sentiment on the card (it’s from Sassy Salutations) and adhered the snowflake using dimensionals. I had tried just stamping the snowflake on the card but it wasn’t dramatic enough. I’m sure that some people won’t like black for Christmas but I like it.

Mixed bunch for a challenge

Today is my inaugural entry into any kind of challenge. I’ve seen sketch challenges and colour challenges but never actually had the right colours or punches or stamp sets to try it out. I’m sliding in, just under the wire, to enter the Pals Paper Arts Challenge 222 which, as a colour challenge, is definitely easier to start with. I hope that you go to the site and check out all the other entries at Pals Paper Arts
The colours that are required for this week are so saffron, early espresso and calypso coral. I tried to create leaves in the three colours for an autumnal look but it just wasn’t working for me. I tried a couple of other stamp sets before I got to Mixed bunch. I love this set – the flowers are just so happy!
I first stamped the flowers in the three colours but the so saffron just faded into the background when next to the early espresso. I’m so glad that I got the Stampin’ Up write markers recently as a 50% off item since I don’t actually have the early espresso ink. Yet. It’s coming tomorrow! Whilst thinking about the next move, I looked at the stamp set again and saw the three flower centres that I’ve never before used. Bingo!
I grabbed some more colours to make this truly a happy happy birthday card – wild wasabi, rose red, cherry cobbler and perfect plum and after stamping the Happy birthday in calypso coral worked my way around the card stamping the flower once in each of the 4 extra colours and early espresso and calypso coral.
After this I stamped the flower centre, and cut it out with my 1/2″ punch but it just didn’t work – the delicate flower centre in so saffron was still overpowered by the dark colours. So I stamped the original flower in so saffron and punched out the centre, again with the 1/2″ punch and adhered that over the centre of each of the flowers.

I know that the punches are expensive, but it was so handy to have this tool to hand. I also tried a 7/8″ scalloped punch. I tend to add the punches to my order when there is one in the weekly deals that I know that I’ll want one day. And I usually add one to my order anyway, just because. This way, I’m building up a nice collection of punches without too much monetary pain and I think my 1/2 inch punch made this card!

Happy 40th Birthday

Julia asked me to make a card for someone at work whose 40th birthday is this week. Until she told me the person was male, I figured I had enough variety already made. Male birthday cards are harder! Plus I don’t know the birthday boy so it’s hard to know whether I should play up the 40 or down. In the end, I went for subtle.

happy hour 40 island indigo

Base: 8.5″ by 5.5″ island indigo

Mat: 4″ by 5.25″ very vanilla

Stamp sets: Happy Hour, Sassy Salutations plus a numeric set that I borrowed (retired)

Inks: island indigo, versamark

Other: Cherry cobbler embossing powder, clear embossing powder

I don’t have any sets with numbers (I need to rectify that!) so when I took the Cool Cats set back to class, I borrowed a set with numbers. Previously I’d tried writing 40 myself using my caligraphy pen. Since I’ve only had that for about a month, I’m not skilled enough to write on a card! I stamped the glasses in the same colour but different glasses to create interest and varied the height of them as well. I positioned the sentiment to fit in with the slope of the glasses and embossed it in cherry cobbler; I echoed the colour in the strawberry. Then I decided to emboss the 40 in clear so that it was there but subtle – in case the birthday person is sensitive about turning 40. I really like how this came out although it took me about a week to finish it. I kept putting it to one side and doing easy things – cutting envelope liners or trying different colour variations on previous cards.
