Northern Flurry for Merry Monday

I’ve been thinking about the Merry Monday challenge for a few days and after discussion with Jen, finally managed to figure it out. The challenge is snowflakes, dry embossing and neutral colours.

I was happy to use my Northern Flurry TIEF for double duty on the challenge requirements – that’s the dry embossing and the snowflakes checked off. I like to do clean and simple cards so often it’s quite tough to meet a challenge requirements as well as keeping the card as I like it. Here’s the end result:

I knew that using the dry embossing folder was a predictable route so tried to only emboss some of the snowflakes but that just wasn’t working out too well. So the next approach was to accent some of the embossing – I like how the Stampin’ Write marker in soft suede looks on the crumb cake card stock. The plan was to use gold as well but it just seemed to disappear into the crumb cake so a metallic bronze sharpie was used instead.

I used the sentiment from the Stampin’ Up! Wondrous Wreath set and heat embossed it in early espresso. I also lined the crumb cake envelope with the backgrounds DSP in early espresso. I would not think to use brown on Christmas cards (although my sister is currently creating some great ones in brown) so I’m glad that this challenge pushed me in this direction.

My first card class

I ran my first card making class on Friday night and it was an incredible amount of fun. More than it ought to be. And possibly more than should be legal. I had two friends over (schedules and illness prevented another two) and we started on our three cards around 7pm. We didn’t finish until 11pm! They weren’t overly complicated cards, but maybe the snack break for cheese and wine and coconut macaroons took longer than I thought. Or maybe we were just having too much fun.

Ramona and Bilma had never met before but there really is something about making cards together which forms bonds. Maybe it’s the slight errors in stamping. Or the laughter as you turn the card over to try again on the other side. Or maybe it’s the grin as Ramona stamps another snowman on the inside of the card and reaches for the glitter. I’m not sure what it is exactly, but it’s a wonderful thing. And I can’t wait to do another class.

We started with this card which uses the Work of Art stamp set.

We then moved onto sponging and stamping and more importantly – glitter! I had conservatively just put glitter on the line of the hill and on where the branches meet the trees. We ended up glittering (is that a verb?) the trunks and the snowman as well. Oh and Ramona’s forehead. Although at least we didn’t glue the glitter there!

After our snack break, we did embossing folders and heat embossing. Bilma is bilingual so was very happy to see that I had the Good Greetings stamp set in Spanish. It’s available this month for free if you hold a workshop or place an order over $300.

I’d encourage you to go to a stamp class if you’ve never been. It’s a far more fabulous experience than you would expect!

Colour

It is amazing to me that I am having so much fun with colour. I would describe myself as colour challenged. Or I would have until I started making cards. I think it’s fair to say that Stampin’ Up! has changed my view of myself. When I started making cards 3.5 months ago I was very much into monochromatic cards – don’t get me wrong, I still love them. But I was having to challenge myself to have two colours on a card and then three. I still find DSP challenging (although I love it as envelope liners) but I’m working on that too! It is enormously helpful having the families of colours – a safety net if you will.

Having said all that, I’m showing cards of only one colour each today!

I also love texture and have completely fallen for the Northern Flurry embossing folder. Once I’d realised that I liked the design as a landscape card and that there was a handy place to add heat embossing, I was sold. And then I started trying the effects of other colour card stock and embossing colours. I find it absolutely fascinating the effects of the different colours.

I accidentally cut the cardstock a quarter inch too small and decide to add an extra layer of very vanilla (or whisper white in the case of the melon mambo) to compensate. I’ve decided that I prefer the extra framing effect this gives but I’m still at a loss to decide which colour I like best.

It’s lucky that I don’t need to have a favourite!

Another Christmas card

It’s another August Christmas card although this time with non-traditional colours.

Details:

Base: Whisper white cardstock 8.5″ by 5.5″ scored and folded in half

Mat: Night of Navy 4″ by 5.25″

I put the night of navy mat in my Northern flurry embossing folder (a great value at $7.95, as are almost all of the embossing folders) and ran it through the big shot. I originally intended this to be a vertical card but I liked how the Merry Christmas sentiment looked in the lower left hand corner. This is from the Good Greetings hostess set (available for free for hosting a party of $300 or more in addition to the normal benefits) and I again heat embossed it – this time in white. A very simple and easily mass-produced card.
