String Theory

One of the blogs that I read religiously is Lydia Fiedler’s understandblue. I think it’s fair to say that Lydia is a technique junky, a quality that I greatly admire. When I read her entry entitled String Theory back in December, I was determined to have a go – she has a video which makes this very easy to follow. The first thing you need though is an old phone book. Luckily, I’m not the kind of person who is prompt in recycling such things and I found a few lurking around the house. I think my brother is becoming used to me using odd things for crafting!

I used dapper denim ink on some Stampin’ Up! retired gold and cream twine which I think accounts for the almost dotted look of the arcs of the shape. The gold obviously doesn’t absorb the ink. I used cling film/shrink wrap and put some drops of ink onto it and then used a plastic glove covered hand to help rub the twine into the ink. Next I put a piece of card into the phone book and let the twine twist itself onto the card. You then add another piece of card and, ensuring that you have some twine poking out of the book, close the book, put your hand on top and pull the twine out.

As Lydia says, you can use the same twine without reinking – this was the first pull of the inked up twine. I found that if you put too much pressure towards the bottom of the book (and thus card), you can get some very solid colour, so it’s better to keep your hand higher up the book. Also, if you’re planning a sentiment, you might want to consider the direction that you’re pulling the twine and don’t have it lined up in the centre. Be careful about smudging your card layers with your gloved hand – for that reason I found it best to wear only one glove. I did get quite messy on some occasions but washing my hair resolved that.

I finished my card off with a dapper denim base and used the Celebrate You thinlits dies. These will be in the upcoming annual catalog, but they are also available as a freebie in Sale-a-bration until the end of March. Personally, I like free. 🙂

I hope you enjoyed today’s project.

Happy Wishes

I have a super simple card to share today – although, surprisingly, it uses ribbon! I love to look at the ribbon spools, I keep them in front of me on a holder my father and brother made, but I rarely use it. Some of the spools even have bows on the ends – I tied them and held them over cards to see the effect. And then changed my mind. But today’s card using the Sale-a-bration set Happy Wishes is simple enough to carry off a ribbon. And that seems to be my thing. Mostly, a ribbon makes the card too fussy so I have to go very simple.

So I inked up the beautiful main stamp in berry burst and added the birthday under it. To tie in with the silver edged berry burst ribbon, I added a piece of silver foil and lots of white (well berry burst) space. A simple card but not too simple because of the ribbon.

I’m trying to make a card using ribbon AND sequins as a challenge from my friend Claire. It’s a tough one! But I’m determined to make one. What kind of challenges do you set yourself in your card making?

I hope you enjoyed today’s project.

New Sale-a-bration products

Just a quick reminder about the new Sale-a-bration products that you can redeem for free from today until the end of the month. The other products are still available too! It’s the perfect time to stock up on essentials – envelopes, thick whisper white and very vanilla card stock, adhesive and so forth. Also an annual subscription to Paper Pumpkin (or a 6 or 3 month one). And of course to get any other products that you need. I kick myself if I have to order what I see as basic supplies in 6 months when I could’ve bought them in Sale-a-bration and been earning freebies. I’d also remind you that if you spend $50 or over or $75, you can choose a free stamp set or bundle from me. For details click on the buttons below.

Petal Pair TIEFs (Textured Impressions Embossing Folders)

I decided to try using one of the embossing folders from the Petal Pair TIEFs to make an entire card. I used the Whisper white narrow notecards and envelopes which are in the Occasions catalog. They are adorable and perfect for a quick note.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Petal Pair TIEF - Amazing You

For the sentiment, I used another of the SAB items, the Amazing You stamp set which I stamped in rich razzleberry. The reason for the colour choice was that I have a rich razzleberry blend and I used that on the whisper white organza ribbon to create a matching ribbon.

Good news: from tomorrow until the end of the month, you can get the Petal Pair TIEFs as a freebie for spending $50 on product. Yes, that’s right! Stampin’ Up! is bringing out yet more options for you to choose during the last couple of weeks of Sale-a-bration. Click on the photo to enlarge. Please note – you MUST use the codes on this flyer to select the products as freebies.

Take a look at the new offerings and make your list – and then get items from your wish list to enable you to get the freebies that you want. I’m planning a Paper Pumpkin subscription – it’s cheaper by the year AND you get 4 $50 freebies (or a combo of the $50 and $100).

I hope you enjoyed today’s project.

See you on Friday,

Lots of lavendar meets brusho

I have a lot of brusho cards to share (don’t worry, I’ll spread them out!) and today’s uses them as paint. I wanted to use Lots of Lavendar and have the right kind of purple so I mixed one using the blue and red brushos. I got a colour I liked on the second attempt – the blue is very intense!

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Lots of lavendar - brusho

I first heat embossed the image in gold. I adore gold embossing; I’ve been a demo for almost 4 years and it is still as exciting, watching the dull powder turn into a gorgeous shiny gold. Then I used an aquapainter to paint my purple onto the flowers and bow. My mossy green brusho wasn’t quite right, so I blended a little yellow to get the shade that I wanted. You really can make just about any colour you like with these 5 pots.

The first version of this card had only a small border showing of the elegant eggplant card but when I finished my second flowers, I realised it would look much better cropped, with a gold foil mat and a deep border of elegant eggplant. It’s too easy to just automatically use your usual layers without thinking.

This set is only available as a freebie until the end of the month – you need a $50 order of product to be able to select it. Check out your wish list!

I hope you enjoyed today’s project.
