Addicted to Brusho!

I’m definitely having trouble using anything but the Brusho watercolor crystals at the moment. I had a class on Sunday where we played with Brusho all afternoon and I haven’t stopped since. There are so many things to do with the crystals – at $30 they seem expensive but they will last forever and you can make any colour you want.

I wanted to make a card for a friend who is planning on taking advantage of the best deal – the starter kit. That’s $125 worth of product for $99 plus tax, free shipping plus two free stamp sets – and then as long as you’re a current member, you get 20% discount. To stay current, you need to buy /sell $300 per quarter which with the discount is $240 or less than $20 per week. A no brainer. So I figured a congratulations card was in order.

I sprinkled the red and prussian blue crystals onto a piece of cling film and then activated them by spritzing with water. Next I pressed a piece of watercolor paper onto the cling film and then turned it over (be careful, the color is intense and can stain) and pulled and pushed the cling film into wrinkled patterns. After I’d left it to dry, I removed the cling film to find this fabulous background. All it needed was a wisteria wonder mat and then a black card base. I added a congrats from the Sunshine Wishes thinlits dies (first adhering some multipurpose adhesive sheet) in black and I love how the card looks.

Card Front Builder Thinlits Dies

I’m using the Card Front Builder Thinlits Dies but today I’m showing that they aren’t just for Christmas cards. A daughter of a friend of mine was graduating from her Indian dance academy but I was unable to attend but I wanted to send a card. And I felt that it should be a very rich looking card with masses of gold. So I started with the Star of Light heat embossed in gold on real red card stock.

Next I cut the borders around the edge using the Card Front Builder Thinlits Dies and glued a piece of gold foil behind before mounting on a card base of real red. Although this would make a beautiful Christmas card, I just needed a little congratulations for Sahana and found the perfect sentiment in the Happy Birthday Gorgeous stamp set. I heat embossed that too and cut it out, and the gold foil mat, with the layering ovals framelits. And I think I achieved my goal – elegant but very rich looking. What do you think?

Eastern Medallions

Today is my third anniversary of being a demonstrator with Stampin’ Up! and I’m happy that I took an extra day off work to spend crafting. It’s definitely a good way to celebrate. When I reflect back over the last three years, I’m struck by how my style has evolved. To start with, I was scared of colour. I remember struggling to use more than one or two on a card – not that I don’t still enjoy using minimal colours, but I have now embraced loud DSP whereas previously, I avoided it. I was also convinced that not everybody could make cards and that I was one of them – now I make cards almost every day and I believe that everyone can – and should! – make cards. I find that the very act of creating something is extremely satisfying and necessary. I used to cook new recipes as my creative outlet which was causing an unexpected problem – we were amassing such an enormous list of dishes that it was hard to fit the favourites in regularly enough! Now, with my creativity being fulfilled with papercrafting, my biggest problem is too many cards and not enough people to send them to, but I’m working on that too. Having said that I have embraced colour, I am of course sharing a single colored card today – my final in my series of the 5 new in-colors and the Eastern Medallions thinlits dies.

I like the simplicity of the scored lines but the DSP is so pretty. I really can’t decide on a favourite!

Here the inner layer is the new Fresh Florals DSP stack – a marvellous collection of 40 sheets of paper; 4 each of 2 double sided patterns in each of the new in colors. I placed the piece of DSP where I wanted it in the middle of a Fresh Fig layer and ran it through the big shot using the Eastern Medallions thinlits dies. Then I snipped off the DSP around the flower, discarded the flower itself and then glued the DSP around the fresh fig flower. I then embossed in white the sentiment from Beautiful You.

Reverse Words

And here I’m playing with two of them – the set Reverse Words is exactly what it says and has 2 words with a watercolor like background. I went very simple to really show off these products – I stamped my hooray in mint macaron straight onto a thick whisper white card base. I then added a strip of the mint macaron glimmer paper – it’s so sparkly! – and then some mint macaron dots finished it off. How simple – and yet effective – is that?

Beautiful You Paper Piecing

Beautiful You was one of the first sets on my must have list and I made 8 cards with it the weekend after Julia won the set during Prize Patrol. I didn’t want to have all 8 post on my blog in a row, but I think maybe I’m spreading them out a bit too much! Beautiful You is a really versatile stamp set; with three beautiful images and eight sentiments it’s able to handle almost any occasion.

I picked out calypso coral for this card and used the colour and my aquapainter to colour in the girl’s dress which was stamped on watercolor paper. One reminder on this – the archival basic black is great, but give it a little time to really dry or your colouring ends up a little grey! I also find it easier (unless I’m doing a big watery wash) to keep very little water in the brush – it’s more controllable. Whilst the dress was drying, I stamped the top of the image again onto the flower design of the calypso coral sheet from the Subtles DSP stack. After snipping around her hat, I glued that in place to give her a fun hat which I matched by covering the envelope flap in the same paper.

Then it was a simple matter of adding a slim basic black mat with fast fuse – a strong adhesive is needed to ensure that the watercolor paper is perfectly flat after it’s been absorbing water. And finally gluing it all onto a calypso coral card base.
