Cupcake Cutouts Framelits Dies

Welcome to October and the first challenge of the month at CAS Colours & Sketches. I’m especially excited about the challenges this month because it’s my first time hosting the entire month. We’re starting off as usual with a colour challenge.

And here’s the banner for the challenge:

Very bright and cheerful, yes? When I decided that I wanted to use emerald envy and tempting turquoise, it occurred to me that these colours are in the Festive Birthday DSP along with one of my favourite colours, melon mambo. So I set about making a CAS card with the DSP and I wanted to do something other than a strip of DSP. It took until the weekend when I realised that I wanted to cut out a word. Luckily the three colours I’d chosen are next to each other in this piece of the paper, they could easily had had one or two of the other colours in the way. I cut out a number of words before deciding on the wish from the cupcake cutouts framelits dies. Next I added the stamped sentiment from the coordinating Sweet Cupcake sentiment in emerald envy and a matching melon mambo enamel shape which I confess is over the dot. It wasn’t until after I’d added it that I decided an enamel shape would look better. But nobody knows it’s under there. Apart from you and me anyway!

I then played with combinations of mats until I saw that white on white was much the best. Too much colour was going to detract from the image.

I hope that you try out these colours – they are bright and cheerful, and to start with, a trifle intimidating. But the richness of them is really fun to play with.

See you tomorrow,

Liz

Floral Boutique DSP

I was having some fun carding this weekend, but I kept making Christmas cards so I moved all my Christmas sets to one side and decided I was making a non Christmas card. They tried to creep back in as I looked at the sketch at the Pals Paper Arts this week, but I resisted and kept my eyes firmly on the Floral Boutique DSP which is beautiful, but for some of the patterns, I can’t envision a really large piece on a card. It would take over. So it was perfect for this challenge.

The reason that this post came out so early is that I’m off to New York for a 2 day conference and I figured it would be best to be certain that I’ve entered it in the challenge rather than struggling from a hotel room. So I cut a strip of the Floral Boutique DSP and added it to my whisper white layer. I knew I wanted a bright pop of colour and tried to use anything but melon mambo but in vain! I love it with the night of navy. So I cut a piece of whisper white slightly under an inch so that it would fit easily into the triple banner punch and created my flag. I popped it up with dimensionals but decided something was missing. That something apparently was some enamel shapes in melon mambo which, I think, finished it off perfectly.

Don’t forget that this is the midway point of the World Card Making celebration at Stampin’ Up! It ends on Wednesday. What with that and the buy 3 get 1 free DSP offer, this is a good time to put in an order. I’m off to put one in myself right now!

I hope you enjoyed today’s project. Please use the hostess code to get free product; the current one is XD4D794N (if your order is over $150, don’t use the code, you get the rewards, but you still get the free gift from me). Click here to go to my online shop or here to join my team. To sign up for Paper Pumpkin and get BOGOF until October 10, click here and use the code BOGO. The World Card Making deals last until tomorrow and the “buy 3 get one free” offer for DSP is good for the rest of the month.

See you tomorrow,

Petals and Paisleys Specialty DSP

Stop hoarding your DSP and especially the metallic specialty papers. I decided to pull out the absolutely gorgeous piece of the Petals and Paisleys Specialty DSP and make a card. And I can’t stop looking at it. It’s so beautiful. It looks even better in real life, so make your own so that you can admire the true beauty of this one.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Petals and Paisleys Specialty DSP - Watercolor Wishes - copper foil

I wanted a large border of night of navy (which matches the DSP) to give some semblance of quiet to the rather busy card. But don’t you love the copper? I cut a piece of copper foil sheets to frame the DSP and I love it! I continued the copper theme by embossing the sentiment from Watercolor Wishes onto very vanilla card stock (don’t forget the embossing buddy) and then cut it out using the layering oval framelits dies. I then cut out a scalloped oval using the same dies from the centre of the copper foil that I used on this card – you can’t tell, so why not?! Then it was a simple matter of construction – I used snail to adhere card on to the top of the copper because it’s slippery and then I popped up the sentiment piece on dimensionals.

I really adore the Petals and Paisleys Specialty DSP and am determined to use all of this single piece of embossed paper. There’s no point having it in your files, doing nothing until it retires. Just get it out and cut it up and share it!

Floral Boutique DSP

I started my card for today by deciding that I really should use some DSP and there was a scrap of the Floral Boutique DSP in my folder. I have a plastic hanging box which takes 12 by 12″ hanging files and I use those to hold my DSP – scraps of a stack are put at the front of the file. Actually this piece was wider and it wasn’t until I was almost done with my card that I realised why it was bothering me and trimmed down my DSP to be an accent rather than trying to take over the card! And that was a good thing, because after I’d stacked my DSP on my piece of whisper white and ensured that the edges were perfect, I was removing an extra spot of glue and managed to push the DSP so that it was wonky. And I didn’t notice until the wiggle room time was up. I usually love that the multipurpose glue gives you adjustment time, but very occasionally, I’ll mess something up because I was done but the glue wasn’t. So I just trimmed off the wonky edge and that’s a second, very easy way, to get your edges lined up perfectly!

Stampin' Up! Floral Boutique DSP and watercolor wishes

I love the navy and white together but I decided that I wanted another pop of colour – and that it wouldn’t be melon mambo, just for a change. I had the watercolour wishes happy birthday sentiment still mounted on a block from yesterday’s card which explains the choice of sentiment. I stamped in sweet sugarplum on a piece of scrap and cropped it out with the layering ovals framelits dies, I also used them to crop out my sweet sugarplum mat. Incidentally, if you don’t have these layering dies, they are on special this week until the 21st, for only $26.25. That’s a great bargain. Just click on the Shop Now button and they can easily be yours – don’t forget to use the hostess code to start amassing your loyalty points. For more details on my loyalty program, click the button on the left.

Then it was just a matter of construction – I put the DSP right up to the edge of the whisper white (and adjusted as previously mentioned!), added a little layer of sweet sugarplum and put that onto a night of navy base. I popped the sentiment and it’s mat up on dimensionals.

Every time I use the Floral Boutique DSP,  I wonder why I haven’t used it more recently. So I hope you like this stack, I have a feeling I’ll be playing with it at the weekend.

See you tomorrow,

Liz

Paisleys and Posies for CAS Colours & Sketches

Happy Thursday and it’s time for a new challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches. This week it’s a colour challenge

Stampin' Up! Paisleys and Posies - Watercolor Wishes

And here’s the banner which inspired my card:

Quite a tricky combination of colours isn’t it? I felt that they needed to be separated but together and the paisleys were the perfect option. I first stamped the sentiment in bermuda bay and then stamped the paisleys in the archival basic black (twist your stamps on the ink pad and THEN tap tap tap for a better coverage). After that it was a relaxing time simply using my stampin’ write markers to colour in portions of the design. I left lots of white (or very vanilla in this case) space to keep the card CAS and to balance the colourful lower half. A wider than usual border of the card base helped to tame the busy-ness of the paisleys and the skinny black mat framed it all nicely.

Why don’t you have a go at these colours and see where they take you? It would be fun to see you in the gallery.

See you tomorrow,

Liz
