Birthday Bash Specialty Paper

One of the new specialty DSP packs in the occasions 2015 catalogue is the Birthday Bash paper. I’ve had this piece cut out ready for a card for a while but couldn’t decide what to do next. I’d been planning to use it with crushed curry but as soon as I changed  the card base to pumpkin pie, it all made sense. Sometimes cards take a while to develop.

Stampin' Up! Yippee Skippee

I stamped the sentiment from the Stampin’ Up! Yippee Skippee set in pumpkin pie on whisper white card stock and then cut it out with the circles collection framelits. I cut out the next larger size from a scrap of pumpkin pie card stock. At this point I decided that I needed something else to anchor the circles and to break up some of the DSP and that’s when I realised that a piece of ribbon with the sentiment would mimic the background. Fortunately I had some pumpkin pie ribbon from a ribbon share last year (I don’t use ribbon very often as you may have noticed so it lasts forever) and after a quick iron to remove the fold from where it was wrapped around a piece of card, I taped the ribbon to the back of the DSP. I then mounted the DSP to the pumpkin pie card base. After that it was simple matter of attaching the sentiment to the card with stampin’ dimensionals. I lined the outside flap of the envelope with a scrap of the same DSP so that it all coordinates.

See you tomorrow,

Son of Zoo Babies

Well, not really son of Zoo Babies but it does feel like a rather long running action movie! Maybe it should be The Return of Zoo Babies! Anyway, I was having so much fun making baby boy cards for Julia to select from when she returns from St Lucia that I had to make another. This one sort of reminds me of the Jungle Book and the elephants all walking in single file. Imagine that there are far more of them.

Stampin' Up! Zoo Babies

They didn’t fit on a standard card (the front elephant’s trunk was – dare I say it? – truncated) so I stamped the three elephants in marina mist on a larger piece of whisper white and cut it down after the stamping. A ruler really is your best friend here – I drew a pencil line across the card so that I could line up my elephants  – using the stamp-a-ma-jig here of course. The congratulations also comes from the Zoo Babies set. I mounted the whisper white on a piece of marina mist sized to give a 1/8 inch border all around.

This odd sized card meant that I could pull out the envelope punch board, a tool that I don’t use enough. It’s so much fun to make your own envelope and it really impresses people too. And it’s so easy. It’s almost like baking a cake – people are so impressed and think that you took hours and hours when in fact it’s the task of a few minutes.

See you tomorrow,

Perpetual Birthday Calendar – August

I decided that it was time to move on a little with my perpetual birthday calendar project and so here’s August.

Stampin' Up! Perpetual Birthday Calendar August

I got the colours from a piece of Painted Petals DSP – I’m using blackberry bliss, blushing bride and rose red. I started by stamping the butterflies at the bottome right hand corner of the calendar – the blackberry bliss butterflies were stamped off once so that the colour blended better with the other pinks. I also punched out a few small butterflies out of card and added a couple.

I then turned my attention to the top and carefully marked the centre in pencil and then stamped August in blackberry bliss. After a few minutes I went to erase the pencil mark and smudged the stamping. This is a good example of the oft cited “there are no mistakes in stamping”! I found my elegant butterfly punch (the small ones couldn’t cover the word, thank goodness this wasn’t November!) and fortunately this covered the smudge. This time I decided to stamp the month in rose red. I then added masses of butterflies in the three colours.

Spring Flowers and Painted Petals

Here’s another card using the circle framelits to create a window to the inside of the card. The earlier versions can be seen here and here. For this one though, I decided to add dry embossing and used the Spring Flowers folder. I would point out though, that you need to cut the window in the card stock before doing the dry embossing or the embossing gets a bit flattened – unless you’re going for the “only slightly embossed” look. I personally didn’t care for it!

Stampin' Up! Painted Petals and Spring Flowers

I cut the circle out with the circles framelits in both the pistachio pudding and the very vanilla cardstocks at the same time. I also had the pistachio pudding a little larger than I needed so that I could trim it to size afterwards. I then dry embossed the pistachio pudding with the spring flowers TIEF. As before, I cut out a small border circle using 2 of the circle framelits to put inside the card. To get the placement right, after putting some multipurpose glue on the frame, I opened the card and put the non-glued side around the hole. Then I carefully closed the card and the frame was in the right place.

I now stamped the flowers from the Painted Petals set inside the frame, using pistachio pudding and strawberry slush inks. All that remained was to trim down the embossed piece of pistachio pudding to fit and glue it down securely using SNAIL glue. I dry embossed the envelope flap with the same embossing folder to match.

Banners and Banners for a baby card

I decided to make a selection of baby cards so that Julia has a choice. Here’s the second one and it uses both Banner Blast and Banner Banter as well as Bravo. Banner Blast is a Sale-a-bration set from last year which I won at a recent crop.

Stampin' Up! Banner Blast, Banner Banter and Bravo

I stamped banners from both the Banner Blast and Banner Banter sets in soft sky with the sentiments in island indigo; I was so happy that the banner punch works for both sets. It wouldn’t be difficult to snip them out, but the punch makes life very easy. I then took a piece of the soft sky 1/8 inch taffeta ribbon and I first attached the middle banner with a glue dot. Then working sideways and measuring the gaps between the banners (it’s one square or 0.5cm on the grid paper if you’re interested) I added the others. I then decided that the banners would be best with little pieces of stampin’ dimensionals and added little pieces to the back of each banner. Then it was a simple matter of anchoring the ribbon behind the piece of whisper white with tape and carefully pressing the banners down into place one at a time.

The sentiment is from the Bravo set and is stamped in island indigo. I lined the envelope as usual with the envelope liners (so easy to cut out 8 from a single sheet of DSP) with the Backgrounds DSP in soft sky.

See you tomorrow,
